A Japanese patinated bronze okimono with an exceptionally high-quality dark patina depicting the study of a powerful panther, signed by Maruki.
The animal’s posture is engaging, with its hind legs bent, tail curled upward at the end, and the body positioned obliquely, culminating in the animal’s head raised high. Its jaws are wide open, revealing the animal’s teeth, while its whiskers are raised.
The fur stripes are masterfully rendered and highlighted with a different patina, even to the touch. The eyes are in gilded bronze, adding greater realism and strength to the animal.
This patinated bronze okimono depicting a panther is signed under the belly with the mark Nihon koku Maruki sei 日本國丸喜製.
Maruki, active during the Meiji period (1868-1912) in Japan, is renowned for the fineness and remarkable weight of his sculptures and is considered one of the finest producers of Japanese bronzes.
