Ivory manju netsuke depicting Kintaro, a legendary figure of Japanese tradition, resting on a large ox.

Kintaro is a folk hero in traditional Japanese stories, portrayed as a young man with a strong and robust body. This manju shows Kintaro, asleep or relaxed, on the back of the ox, with a calm and serene expression. The details of Kintaro’s hair, face and clothing are rendered with precision, highlighting his youthful appearance and his inner strength.

The ox, below Kintaro, represents a symbol of strength, stability and patience. The anatomical details and distinctive features of the ox are rendered with care, giving the manju a realistic look and feel of authenticity.

Kintaro’s friends were the creatures of the mountains, such as rabbits, monkeys and wild boars. Kintaro liked all animals. Legend has it that they played sumo together, but no one could ever beat Kintaro. A bear, who was very proud of his strength, decided to face Kintaro, saying, “I will fight you”, but then Kintaro won.

The back of this Kintaro ivory manju netsuke with ox is signed Ippôsai.

The term “Manju” refers to the round and flat shape of the object, which recalls traditional Japanese sweets.
