Large Japanese bronze okimono with dark patina from the Meiji period (1868-1912) depicting a walking elephant.

The dark patinated finish gives the surface an exceptionally lifelike sheen and visual depth, highlighting the natural folds of the animal’s skin. The tusks, on the other hand, are smooth and soft to the touch.

The artisan who created this sculpture undoubtedly paid great attention to the anatomical details of the elephant, such as the curvature of the tusks, the wrinkles in the skin, and the vibrant expression in the eyes, to make the work as realistic and engaging as possible.

The bronze okimono is signed beneath the elephant’s belly with a raised Japanese mark within a square reserve.

This splendid patinated bronze okimono featuring an elephant is a perfect fit for both modern and contemporary settings as well as more classic and traditional ones. The sculpture can be displayed on a piece of furniture, perhaps with a wooden or marble top, to further accentuate the artwork and offer an aesthetic contrast with its dark surface.
