A Japanese ivory netsuke depicting a South Seas fisherman with long, curly hair, leaning against a giant perforated sphere, and exerting effort to move it, as evidenced by the strain on his face.
His arms in a pushing position and his bare torso convey the intensity of his endeavor as he attempts to shift the enormous sphere.
The image is simultaneously amusing and engaging, inviting one to imagine the reason or intent behind trying to move such an imposing object. It could represent the world or a mysterious unknown object, leaving room for the observer’s interpretation.
The himotoshi of this Japanese ivory netsuke depicting a fisherman is natural as the holes are created organically.
