A Japanese folding screen, Byōbu, consisting of six panels painted on paper, depicting a charming scene with characters immersed in a moment of daily life, enjoying a picnic on the banks of a river during the festive Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) season.
The scene places them prominently under two Sakura (cherry blossom) trees. During Japan’s Hanami season, it is common to relish the sight of blooming sakura while enjoying a picnic in parks and hills.
The technique employed utilizes pastel colors, in contrast with the neutral background, imparting a sense of lightness, softness, and elegance to the artwork. These colors are expertly used to paint the characters’ attire and details, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to the scene.
At the center of the composition, the river gently flows, representing a fundamental element of the landscape. Its banks are enriched with Matsu pine trees, symbols of courage, resilience, and longevity in Japanese culture. These trees convey a sense of stability and continuity to the scene, while their leaves create a subtle shading effect that adds depth and realism to the artwork.
The surrounding landscape context is equally evocative, with mountainous reliefs in the background. The small dwellings along the riverbanks add an authentic touch and contribute to creating a realistic setting. The combination of these landscape elements creates a harmonious and tranquil scene, where nature and humanity blend into a vision of serenity and joy.
This Japanese folding screen depicting characters immersed in a moment of daily life is signed by Sōrin 棕林 and bears the seals Sōrin 棕林 and ‘Masayuki no in’ 維幸之印 at the lower right.
