Unusual and amusing ivory netsuke depicting a Tanuki, with horn-inlaid eyes, tightly wrapped in a lotus leaf. Another lotus leaf is folded over the head as a hat.

The tanuki is an astute master of disguise and shape-shifting in Japanese folklore. Here he is wrapped in a lotus cloak as a priestly disguise.

Himotoshi holes between the stem of the lotus leaf. Signed Shosai 勝齋, below the base, on the edge of the leaf.
